A gunman killed 26 people, 20 of them children between the ages of 5 and 10, in a shooting on Friday morning at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., about 65 miles northeast of New York City, the authorities said.

The gunman, who was believed to be in his 20s, walked into a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where his mother was a teacher. He shot and killed her and then killed 20 students, most in the same classroom. He also shot five other adults, and then killed himself inside the school. One person was also injured in the shooting.

Another body related to the shooting was at another scene, the authorities said, declining to provide more specifics.

A law enforcement official identified the shooter as Adam Lanza and said that a brother, Ryan Lanza, had been questioned.

The mass shooting is among the worst in the nation’s history.

“The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” a visibly distraught President Obama said during a nationally televised address Friday afternoon.

After pausing to compose himself for perhaps five long seconds, Mr. Obama said, “They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.”

Then the president wiped the corner of his eye.

Some witnesses described a harrowing scene inside the school with the sounds of gunfire followed by sounds of screams as terrified students and staff members hid in classrooms, closets or wherever they could quickly take shelter.

One 9-year-old student said he was in the gym when the shooting erupted.

“We were in the gym, and I heard really loud bangs,” said the boy, as he stood shivering and weeping outside the school with his father’s arms draped around him. “We thought that someone was knocking something over. And we heard yelling, and we heard gunshots. We heard lots of gunshots. We heard someone say, ‘Put your hands up.’ I heard, ‘Don’t shoot.’ We had to go into the closet in the gym. Then someone came and told us to run down the hallway. There were police at every door. There were lots of people crying and screaming.”

Another student at the school told an NBC affiliate in Connecticut: “I was in the gym and I heard like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner and we huddled. We all heard these booming noises, and we started crying. So the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us. Then a police officer told us to run outside.”

State police said the Newtown police called them shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police. “On- and off-duty troopers responded to the school, and with Newtown police immediately upon arrival entered the school and began an active shooter search,” Lieutenant Vance said.

Eighteen of the students were pronounced dead at the school, and two others were taken to hospitals where they were declared dead. All the adults shot at the school were pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement officials said the weapons used by the gunman were a Sig Sauer and a Glock. In addition to the two handguns, the police also found an M4 carbine at the scene that they believe belonged to the gunman.

Meredith Artley, the managing editor of CNN.com, said that someone who works at the school told her the shooting happened in the hallway. “She described it as a ‘Pop, pop, pop,’” Ms. Artley said. “She said three people went out into the hall and only one person came back, the vice principal, she said, who was shot in the leg or the foot, who came crawling back. She cowered under the table and called 911. There must have been a hundred rounds.”

As news of the shooting spread, frantic family members descended on the scene and were taken to a nearby fire house where teachers and students who had been evacuated from the school had been taken by the authorities. Some clergy members were also at the fire house.

As news of the shooting spread, frantic family members descended on the scene and were taken to a nearby fire house where teachers and students who had been evacuated from the school had been taken by the authorities. Some clergy members were also at the fire house.

“The teachers wrote down the names of all the children,’’ said Monsignor. Robert Weiss, the pastor at St Rose of Lima in Newtown. “The ones who were unaccounted for, those parents went to another room and wrote their names on a list.”

“It was around, obviously,’’ he added, “the number that passed away.”

Another clergy member at the fire house, Rabbi Sholom Deitsch of Chabbad Jewish Center in Ridgefield, Conn, said, “I see a lot of fear and disbelief in peoples eyes. It’s a very difficult scene, one I’ve never seen in my life.’’

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who was at the scene of the shooting comforting relatives of victims, called the killings a “tragedy of unspeakable terms.’’

The school, located among wooded hills and suburban tracts in Fairfield County, 12 miles east of Danbury, serves kindergarten through fourth grade. The school has about 700 students.

“It’s just a little country school,’’ said Robert Place, 65, as he stood near the scene. “The look is very ′50s or ′60s. One floor. It’s always had a good reputation. People come to Newtown for the schools.’’

The school’s principal, Dawn Hochsprung, was reportedly one of those shot. But at the home of her daughter Cristina Hassinger, in Oakville, Conn., the family was still awaiting any news of her fate.

“We’re looking for any hope,” said Ryan Hassinger, the son-in-law of the principal.

“I looked on Twitter and it says that she is passed,” Mr. Hassinger said. But, he added, the family was “just waiting.”

Mr. Obama was briefed on the shooting at 10:30 a.m., the White House said.

“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in these past few years and each time I learn the news I react not as a president but as anyone else would as a parent and that was especially true today,” Mr. Obama said on Friday afternoon. “I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.”

Maureen Kerins, a hospital nurse who lives close to the school, learned of the shooting from the television and hurried to the school to see if she could help. “I stood outside waiting to go in, but a police officer came out and said they didn’t need any nurses so I knew it wasn’t good,’’ Ms. Kerins said.

In front of a senior center next door to the school, a 20-year-old woman was with her 4-year-old sister, who was in the school at the time of the shooting. The older woman came to pick up her younger sister along with their mother. The girl had her arms and legs wrapped around her older sister.

When a reporter asked the woman what the little girl knew of what had happened, the woman said, “Absolutely nothing, and we don’t plan to tell her anything.”

It has exposed the nation’s fragile, dilapidated and shoddy infrastructure, one that crumbles under minimal stress. It has highlighted the inability of utility companies, as well as state and federal agencies, to cope with the looming environmental disasters that because of the climate crisis will soon come in wave after wave. But, most important, it illustrates the depraved mentality of an oligarchic and corporate elite that, as conditions worsen, retreats into self-contained gated communities, guts basic services and abandons the wider population.”

- Chris Hedges (via azspot)

what i said: i wish we had more queer characters in media

what i said: i wish we had more queer characters in media

After more than eleven years of the US waging wars abroad in the name of “fighting terrorism” a new report released Tuesday shows that the number of global terror attacks has dramatically increased during the post-9/11 era, not decreased.

The new Global Terrorism Index (GTI) found that while the US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere generated huge spikes in terrorist activity and civilian deaths in those countries, it is North America which has been most insulated from the growth in violence.

Produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) the GTI is the first index to rank countries on the impact of terrorism and analyses the associated economic and social dimensions. The index is based on data from the Global Terrorism Database, which is collected and collated by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), headquartered at the University of Maryland.

“After 9/11, terrorist activity fell back to pre-2000 levels until after the Iraq invasion, and has since escalated dramatically,” Steve Killelea, founder and executive chairman of the Institute for Economics and Peace, told Reuters in an e-mail interview.

“Iraq accounts for about a third of all terrorist deaths over the last decade, and Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan account for over 50 percent of fatalities.”

The glaring fault of the study, which demands note, is that it employs a very narrow definition of the term “terrorism”—a word that Glenn Greenwald says “simultaneously means nothing and justifies everything.” Within the scope of GTI report, the term excludes the violence of state or government-based actors like the US armed forces or NATO’s military regime.

As Reuters notes:

The researchers used the University of Maryland definition of “terrorism”: “the threatened or actual use of illegal force and violence by a non-state actor to attain a political, economic, religious, or social goal through fear, coercion, or intimidation”.

It did not include casualties from government-backed action such as aerial bombing or other killings.

Long a critique of the “global war on terrorism” is that the definition of the word “terrorism” is meant to connotate violence perpetrated by less powerful, though committed, militant networks and not the politically motivated violence of powerful nations, such as the United States or others.

As Greenwald argued at Salon.com in 2011:

This topic is so vital because this meaningless, definition-free word — Terrorism — drives so many of our political debates and policies. Virtually every debate in which I ever participate quickly and prominently includes defenders of government policy invoking the word as some sort of debate-ending, magical elixir: of course President Obama has to assassinate U.S. citizens without due process: they’re Terrorists; of course we have to stay in Afghanistan: we have to stop The Terrorists; President Obama is not only right to kill people (including civilians) using drones, but is justified in boasting and even joking about it, because they’re Terrorists; of course some people should be held in prison without charges: they’re Terrorists, etc. etc.

And as the linguistics professor and author Noam Chomsky, commenting on the death of innocent people throughout the US military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, said: “Wanton killing of innocent civilians is terrorism, not a war against terrorism.”

Despite the flaws of the definition used in the report, its value remains in the close examination of the last decade and tells a stark story about the nature non-state terrorism since 2001.

One of the key lessons of the report, as Killelea told Reuters, is that foreign powers should think twice before intervening militarily in regions like Yemen and Syria (or anywhere for that matter), as the mere presence of foreign armies simply adds to the grievances and anger of local people.

Other key findings include:

The number of terrorist incidents and the number of successful attacks has steadily increased over the last decade.

In 2011, 91% of terrorist attacks were successful.

From 2002 to 2011 over one third of all victims killed in terrorist attacks were Iraqi.

In 2011 there were 4564 terrorist incidents globally, resulting in 7473 deaths and 13961 injuries.

Most terrorist attacks occur in the context of a wider conflict situation.

Whilst religious terrorism often gets widespread coverage, there is a significant level of terrorism from non-religious groups.

Western Europe experiences many more terrorist incidents than the U.S. having also suffered 19 times more fatalities than the U.S.

Over the period 2002-2011, terrorists were most likely to target private citizens and property, government, police, and business. The trends for these attacks have been increasing as a percentage for all targets since 2002. Military installations and personnel were only targeted in 4% of incidents.

Global incidents, fatalities and injuries are dominated by events in lower middle income countries. Seven of the ten countries most affected by terrorism are from the lower middle income bracket.

Low income countries are much less likely to suffer from terrorism than lower middle income countries. This suggests that poverty is not a prime driver of terrorism.

The majority of global incidents, fatalities and injuries occur in countries with hybrid regimes1 and account for 46% of incidents, 54% of fatalities and 60% of all injuries.

Terrorism correlates with low political stability, low intergroup cohesion, human rights violations and with high levels of group grievances.

From 2002 to 2011, North America was the least likely region to suffer from a terrorist attack, followed by Western Europe.

‘Poorest president’ donates 90% of his salary

How’s this as a man of the people: The president of Uruguay, José Mujica, has earned a nickname, “el presidente mas pobre” (translation: “poorest president”). The 77-year-old recently admitted to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that he donates almost all of his presidential salary, making him the poorest, or, as Univision pointed out, most generous pre

sident, in the world. El presidente explained he receives $12,500 a month but keeps only $1,250. The public servant told the newspaper, “I do fine with that amount; I have to do fine because there are many Uruguayans who live with much less.” He and his wife—a senator who also donates part of her salary—live in a farmhouse in Montevideo. His biggest expense is his Volkswagen Beetle, valued at $1,945. Perhaps not surprisingly, under the former guerrilla fighter, who was elected in 2010 as a member of the left-wing coalition, the Broad Front, the country has become known for being one of the least corrupt on the continent. Mujica has no bank accounts and no debt, and he enjoys one thing money can’t buy: the companionship of his dog, Manuela. The Uruguayan is not the first president to donate his salary. U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who came from wealth, donated his salary when in office, as did President Herbert Hoover. Hoover, who grew up poor, decided to never accept money for public service, so he could not be accused of corruption.

“You can kill the revolutionary, but you can’t kill the revolution.” - Fred Hampton

Today, December 4th, Civil Rights activist and deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton, at just 21 years of age, was assassinated in his 2337 West Monroe Street apartment in Chicago in 1969 by a team of government officials conspiring from the FBI’s COINTELPRO unit, the Chicago Police Department, and Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Black Panther leader Mark Clark was also killed in the raid and four other members sustained critical gunshot injuries. After the firing of between 90 to 99 bullets by the government unit, Hampton’s 8-month pregnant fiancée, Deborah Johnson, was forced to flee the bedroom of the apartment where Hampton lay unconscious so that two of the officers could verify he was dead, shooting him twice in the head at point-blank range. Later, it was revealed that a paid FBI informant had delivered him the barbiturate Seconal so that he would remain unconscious during the planned raid.

The raid began at 4 am as 14 Chicago police officers and Cook County prosecutor Edward Hanrahan armed themselves with several shotguns, handguns, and a .45 caliber machine gun. The unit had previously obtained a warrant, in search of weapons, and publicly claimed after the attack that they were met with heavy fire from the Black Panther members. However, only 1 shot was delivered from the Panthers, coming from a shotgun held by Mark Clark, which investigators determined most likely occurred after Clark had been shot in the heart and fell to the ground.

A grand jury from Cook county indicted the seven surviving Black Panther members of the attack on charges of attempted murder, armed violence, and other weapons charges - each charge was later dropped. Edward Hanrahan and the 14 Chicago Police officers were exonerated from any official misconduct by the police Internal Investigations Division. The assassinations of Hampton and Clark were found as “justifiable homicides” by a coroner and after survivors of the attack and members of Clark and Hampton’s family filed suit, demanding an investigation as to whether or not their civil rights were violated, a federal grand jury issued no indictment. Following a dismissal, a criminal trial investigating charges of “conspiracy to obstruct justice” found each of the defendants in the government unit that killed Clark and Hampton not guilty. After a decade long legal battle, the petitioners of the initial civil suit, Hampton et al., were issued a settlement on February 28, 1983, receiving $1.85 million from the Chicago, Cook County, and federal governments. In the end, Edward Hanrahan and the 14 Chicago Police officers successfully got away with murder.

Hampton had been under investigation by the FBI since 1967. FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover deemed a number of Civil Rights leaders, most especially those associated with the Black Panther Party, as “subversive” and “radical” revolutionary bodies capable of overthrowing the U.S. government. Hampton’s charisma and ability to effectively communicate with people from all walks of life marked him as a primary target. Jeffrey Haas, the attorney for the plaintiffs in the federal suit Hampton v. Hanrahan, said of him:

Fred Hampton, at twenty-one, was a tremendously charismatic and powerful figure in Chicago. He could talk to welfare mothers, gang kids, and he could talk to law students and college students. He had the ability to pull people together. But he made people believe in themselves. He made people feel powerful and that they could bring about change. And that was his real threat.

And so, we knew there was this program to prevent the rise of a messiah.

Out of the FBI’s war against the Civil Rights and Black Liberation movements, the Panthers were targeted the most intensely, accounting for 233 out of 295 documented attacks against such groups. Noam Chomsky, who said the December 4th incident was “the gravest domestic crime of the Nixon administration,” explained the FBI’s undue paranoia in his 1973 work COINTELPRO:

A top secret Special Report for the president in June 1970 gives some insight into the motivations for the actions undertaken by the government to destroy the Black Panther Party. The report describes the party as ‘the most active and dangerous black extremist group in the United States.’ Its ‘hard core members’ were estimated at 800, but ‘a recent poll indicates that approximately 25 percent of the black population has a great respect for the BPP, including 43 percent of blacks under 21 years of age.’ On the basis of such estimates of the potential of the party, the repressive apparatus of the state proceeded against it to ensure that it did not succeed in organizing as a substantial social or political force.

This incident was just one of many murders of not only Black Panther members but Black Liberation and Civil Rights leaders carried out by the FBI through COINTELPRO, the covert operations of which were successfully kept secret from the public until 1971 after the leftist activist group Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI raided an FBI office in Pennsylvania, exposing the incredible information they found to the media. Chomsky described Fred Hampton as one of the most promising members of the Black Panther Party and his influence has been appropriately credited with marking the independence of Black political leaders in Chicago. Even though he was killed at just 21 years of age, Hampton’s revolutionary wisdom and spirit continues to live on to this very day. He demonstrated this spirit:

We don’t think you fight fire with fire; we think you fight fire with water. We’re going to fight racism not with racism, but we’re going to fight with solidarity. We say we’re not going to fight capitalism with black capitalism, but we’re going to fight it with socialism. We’re still here to say we’re not going to fight reactionary pigs and reactionary state’s attorneys like this and reactionary state’s attorneys like Hanrahan with any other reactions on our part. We’re going to fight their reactions with all of us people getting together and having an international proletarian revolution.

Black people need some peace. White people need some peace. And we are going to have to fight. We’re going to have to struggle. We’re going to have to struggle relentlessly to bring about some peace, because the people that we’re asking for peace, they are a bunch of megalomaniac warmongers, and they don’t even understand what peace means. And we’ve got to fight them. We’ve got to struggle with them to make them understand what peace means.

And so he did. It is unclear what the alternate version of history could have been had Hampton not been assassinated but the remarkable significance of the impression he was able to leave on the world at such a young age is uncontested. The rarity of his character and his dedication toward promoting unfettered equality for all of humanity affirm him as a revolutionary figure not often seen.
